Video Sites in India
Could not resist the temptation after reading an article today about Reliance launching a site (BigFlicks.com) for online video in India. Whats happening with every one in India yaar ? There is no unique idea anymore, its just me too, me too !!
We all have seen that there are probably thousands of bollywood video sites out there on net, some as old as 10 years, then why launch more? Dont these big companies know that these sites do not make money for more than 2 people’s livelihood ? If this was a good business, wouldnt we read and hear about such companies going IPO or being bought out?
There is Rajshri, Buzz18, IndyaOnDemand, Ishare from rediff, Eros and many more I can list here, but whats the point ? I do not see it alteast. With low bandwidth availability in India, how do these sites expect that they will succed. And OH if they have NRI market in their mindset, then wait for the surprise, the NRIs do not buy on internet, atleast from Indian sites, there have been numerous examples of such demises of Indian ecommerce on net, homeindia, sholay, indiaplaza, namaste etc. Still these companies do not get it. They think they can fool the common public which is going to buy shares from them. Common yaar, dont do this, dont create a business model, read- copy a business model, in anticipation of ripping off the poor investor.
One thought comes to my mind, do these companies even do any sort of survey before launching. Rajshri guy is running around trying to get his company funded after blowing off a lot of money in his website and learning the hard way that this bollywood portal business doesnt pay off. Still Reliance had to get into this. Is it the best use of public money? I dont think so, but who can stop Reliance !!
If you ask me, the only way this will work out is consolidation, create a consortium of all sites into one tied together, but then such lonely webmasters who copy paste and scan from wherever they can, and create bollywood sites to earn some pocket change every month from Google adsense, probably wont agree to join this consortium, I do not blame them. Google adsense has made this easy for any and everyone. I wonder how Reliance, Rajshri, Rediff, Eros, Buzz18 and others will compete against thousands of such webmasters, only time will tell.
Till then, rest in peace for such video sites…….
